Data Exploration

Section 1: Data Biography

Dataset Introduction:

The dataset contains information on motor vehicle crashes reported to the Denver Police Department within the City and County of Denver over the past five calendar years, plus the current year to date. The data is dynamic, allowing for updates, additions, deletions, and modifications at any time to ensure accuracy. Some crucial components include the First Occurrence Date, Reported Date, Last Occurrence Date, and Incident Address, and Neighborhood Id, etc.

Source and Production:

The original source of the data is the Denver Police Department. The dataset is regularly updated by the department, with new incidents added and existing data updated through the investigative process. The most recent update was on 4/18/2024. The data collection process involves input from various sources, and while efforts are made to ensure accuracy, errors can occur due to reliance on multiple data providers.

Collection Process:

Data collection primarily involves the submission of motor vehicle crash reports to the Denver Police Department. The department completes a State of Colorado Accident Report for incidents meeting certain criteria, such as significant damage, injuries, fatalities, or involvement of drugs/alcohol. These reports are then processed and added to the dataset. The data are continually refined over time as new incidents are reported and additional information becomes available during investigations.

Purpose and Intended Users:

The primary motivation behind collecting this data is to analyze and understand motor vehicle crash trends, identify areas of concern, and implement measures to improve road safety. The intended users of this dataset include traffic safety analysts, policymakers, researchers, law enforcement agencies, and the general public. Access to this information enables stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding traffic safety initiatives, enforcement strategies, infrastructure improvements, and public awareness campaigns.
